Get Firefox - Don't click the Blue E

Get Firefox!

Using Internet Explorer is just not a good idea. Firefox is faster, safer and packed with features. Tabbed browsing alone would be worth making the switch. You can have tons of windows open and switch among them quickly without having to open multiple copies of the browser like you have to in that other browser. (MS says that tabbed browsing is on the way eventually.)

Scott Granneman has written a good book on the subject of switching to Firefox called Don't Click the Blue E. At the time of this post he is being inverviewed on The Well. The Well is an online community that predates what you probably think of as the internet. It is a great place for conversation on gazillions of subjects. If you join or just visit there, look for posts by sd@well.com. That would be me.

Anyway, get Firefox. It is easy to get started. It allows you to import your IE bookmarks and settings and you won't miss any of the stuff you're accoustomed to. You'll just get a lot more, including protection from a host of Internet bugs like exploits, spyware and malware.

A new column on Computer User also, Qumana LE

I have a new "Newbie Advisor" column published in the recent Computer User. It is about the death of fax machines. Read it here.

There are links to my other Computer User columns on my website.

Qumana le is free new blogging software piece that I heard about at gnomedex.
I'm trying it now, can you tell?

It isn't too impressive to me, but then I haven't read the friendly manual.

Let's talk about Podcasting soon, mmmkay?

Atlanta Computer Questions Newsgroup

If you have a computer question, it is likely that someone else needs the information, too.
So, I've started a Google Newsgroup called Atlanta Computer Questions. Feel free to sign up on the post below this one. You'll be able to read about other folks' problems and the solutions to those problems or to post your own questions.

If you've never joined a newsgroup before (they pre-date the browser based web) they are sort of like bulletin boards. One person posts a comment or question and other members can respond once they log on. All of this can be handles through e-mail these days and you can set yourself up to see the posts either in your e-mail account or whenever you happen to visit the group.

I'll be moderating the group and hope to provide answers to your questions but the group will be able to chime in with their experiences, too.

So, why not give it a try? You can always undo your membership in the group later if you don't like it. I'll see you online.
